District 7's Challenges
The recent dismantling of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives at the federal level under President Trump poses significant challenges for District 7 in Boston, particularly for its diverse communities in Roxbury, Dorchester, and Mattapan. However, despite these challenges, District 7 has the opportunity to reaffirm and strengthen its local DEI efforts in several key ways if we have strong leadership that fights for the people, and leadership that delivers real results.
Dismantling DEI: Key Impacts on District 7
Loss of Federal DEI Funding
- Federal grants and programs that supported DEI initiatives in housing, education, workforce development, and small business support may face budget cuts or elimination.
- Local organizations and city-funded programs may need alternative funding from state, private, and philanthropic sources to sustain DEI-focused efforts.
Challenges for Minority-Owned Businesses & Hiring Equity
- Federal rollbacks on supplier diversity and affirmative action in contracting could limit opportunities for minority-owned businesses to secure city contracts.
- Local policies will be crucial in maintaining equitable hiring practices and creating new opportunities for historically marginalized communities.
Impact on Education & Workforce Training
- DEI initiatives within Boston Public Schools and local colleges may be affected by reduced federal support for programs that promote diverse curricula, faculty diversity, and equitable access to educational resources.
- Workforce development programs that help underrepresented communities may need state and city-level reinforcement to ensure continued access to career pathways.
Threats to Community Policing & Criminal Justice Reform
- Federal rollbacks on police accountability and criminal justice reform may weaken oversight and reduce funding for community-based safety initiatives.
- District 7 must advocate for local solutions, such as community policing programs and restorative justice efforts, to ensure continued progress in public safety and equity.
Potential Reversal of Inclusive Housing Policies
- The dismantling of federal fair housing rules could lead to weaker tenant protections and less funding for affordable housing initiatives.
- City-level efforts, including rent stabilization policies and investment in affordable housing, will be necessary to combat displacement and gentrification.

How I Will Respond To These Challenges
Despite the recent dismantling of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives at the federal level, District 7 has an opportunity to exercise a leadership role in preserving and advancing DEI initiatives level by leveraging city and state policies, community partnerships, and local advocacy,. The key actions include:
- Strengthening Local DEI Policies – Advocating for city ordinances that protect and expand DEI initiatives regardless of federal actions.
- Investing in Alternative Funding – Seeking state grants, private partnerships, and philanthropic investments to sustain programs that serve marginalized communities.
- Expanding Local Business & Workforce Support – Implementing local supplier diversity programs and workforce training to ensure economic inclusion.
- Advancing Equitable Education & Youth Development – Partnering with Boston Public Schools and community colleges to ensure educational access and diverse representation.
- Protecting Affordable Housing & Anti-Displacement Efforts – Strengthening local housing policies to ensure low-income and minority residents can stay in their communities.
Our neighborhoods deserve leadership that listens, leadership that fights for the people, and leadership that delivers real results. If this is the results-oriented leadership you are seeking, then join me in building a better, more inclusive future for District 7!
